Rangers Football Club is under increasing scrutiny as fan behavior at Ibrox spirals out of control, raising the prospect of serious sporting consequences.
Despite prior UEFA warnings about inappropriate conduct—such as object-throwing and offensive displays—issues resurfaced during the recent 1-1 draw against Celtic, where fans unfurled a provocative banner depicting Graeme Souness with a shotgun and an inflammatory message.
This incident could lead to more than fines or partial stadium closures, which have already been floated as possible punishments.
According to football finance expert Dan Plumley, Rangers may face harsher consequences, including the possibility of a points deduction. Plumley suggests that if traditional fines aren’t acting as effective deterrents, governing bodies may be forced to impose sporting penalties to curb repeat offenses.
Speaking exclusively to *Ibrox News*, Plumley said: “We keep seeing similar incidents, and fines clearly aren’t changing behavior.
When clubs continually breach rules, the ultimate deterrent is a sporting one—like docking points. That kind of penalty hits clubs where it really hurts, and it’s not off the table.”
He warned that although such a move would be controversial and might set a major precedent, it could finally compel supporters to think twice before endangering their club’s competitive standing.
Compounding the turmoil, interim boss Barry Ferguson remains in limbo, leading a fractured squad amid rising tensions off the pitch.
The Union Bears, a vocal fan group, have targeted the Ibrox hierarchy with protests just as major boardroom changes loom on the horizon.
Unless a solution is found soon, the growing unrest and the threat of extreme disciplinary action could derail Rangers just as they enter a pivotal phase in their future.
