Brighton Plot Stunning Move as Premier League Record Teeters – Talks Open with Former Liverpool and Leeds Star in Shocking Transfer Twist

James Milner in Line for Brighton Extension as Premier League Appearance Record Hangs in the Balance

Veteran midfielder James Milner could be handed a new deal at Brighton & Hove Albion, as the club weighs his future ahead of a possible Premier League milestone.

The 39-year-old, who joined the Seagulls in 2023 after a glittering career with clubs including Liverpool, Manchester City, and Leeds United, has been in talks with Brighton over a contract extension — though it’s not yet clear if it’s as a player, coach, or a hybrid role.

Milner’s current contract expires this summer after an injury-plagued season in which he featured just three times before suffering a serious hamstring injury during a draw with Arsenal last August.

Despite his limited time on the pitch, Milner remains a key presence in the dressing room, offering mentorship and instilling a winning mentality in Brighton’s young squad.

Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler recently praised Milner’s off-field influence, calling him a cultural asset who sets the tone both during the week and on matchdays.

Hurzeler expressed a strong desire to retain Milner beyond the current season, highlighting his leadership, experience, and professionalism.

The Athletic reports that ongoing contract discussions could see Milner remain at the club in some capacity — and if he does extend his playing career and regains fitness, he would be within striking distance of a Premier League record.

Milner currently sits on 637 top-flight appearances, just 16 behind Gareth Barry’s all-time record of 653.

With Brighton still vying for a place in next season’s Europa Conference League, they may see value in retaining a seasoned campaigner like Milner — even if his contributions are mostly behind the scenes.
