Alious Rangers Urged to Champion Goal-Line Tech After Raskin Controversy Exposes VAR Flaws
Calls are mounting for Rangers to lead the charge for implementing goal-line technology in Scottish football following a controversial disallowed goal by Nicolas Raskin in their clash against Hibernian. The midfielder believed he had doubled Rangers’ lead at Easter Road, but referee Nick Walsh and VAR officials claimed there was no definitive proof the ball had fully crossed the line. Moments later, Hibs capitalized by scoring an equalizer.
The SFA later clarified that no conclusive evidence existed to overturn the on-field decision, but Rangers interim manager Barry Ferguson labeled the situation “mind-blowing” and insisted the issue be formally raised with governing authorities.
Football pundit Michael Stewart expressed strong sympathy with Rangers, noting that the lack of goal-line technology left officials without clear evidence, despite the overwhelming appearance that Raskin’s strike had gone in. “It looks over the line. That moment clearly exposed the limitations of our current system,” Stewart said on BBC Sportscene.
He emphasized that VAR alone isn’t enough, and clubs must now consider investing in proper goal-line tools to prevent such controversies. While implementation would require additional camera equipment and increased spending, Stewart suggested Rangers should spearhead a campaign to convince other Premiership clubs to adopt the technology.
Although some, like pundit Steven Thompson, warned that budget constraints might make it a tough sell, Stewart insisted it’s a matter of fairness and modern standards. “This is about more than VAR—it’s about having a reliable system in place. From the fans’ viewpoint, that was a clear goal. The current setup just isn’t good enough.”
