Veteran broadcaster Jeff Stelling has publicly criticised Rangers Football Club for dragging out their managerial appointment process, warning that the prolonged delay could hurt their preparations for a pivotal summer ahead.
Speaking on talkSPORT alongside Ibrox legend Ally McCoist, the former Sky Sports presenter didn’t hold back, calling out the club’s indecision in the wake of Barry Ferguson’s interim stint. Ferguson, who took over temporarily following Philippe Clement’s dismissal in February, had made it clear he was keen on landing the role permanently. However, Rangers recently confirmed they would be moving in a different direction.
While the managerial search has featured high-profile candidates like Real Madrid assistant Davide Ancelotti—who is now expected to join Brazil’s national team—no firm decision has been made. Steven Gerrard, Sean Dyche, and Russell Martin have also been linked with the post, adding to speculation and fan impatience.
With new ownership expected to take control before the next campaign begins, uncertainty looms over Ibrox. McCoist attempted to provide context, suggesting the looming change at boardroom level is the primary reason for the hold-up. “There’s no point appointing a manager if the incoming owners want their own man,” he argued.
Stelling, however, wasn’t convinced that this justified the ongoing delay. “It’s been three months since the last manager was sacked. How long does it take to make a decision?” he questioned. His concern is that any new manager will be thrown in too late to properly assess the squad, make key transfer decisions, or prepare for upcoming European fixtures.
He warned that the lack of urgency could lead to a disjointed start to next season, especially with Europa League qualifiers on the horizon. “You need someone in now who can evaluate the team, decide who stays, who goes, and what needs fixing. Whoever gets the job might not have that luxury,” Stelling added.
The clock is ticking at Ibrox, and while the desire to align managerial appointments with new ownership is understandable, critics like Stelling fear that indecision now could lead to chaos later.
