Paul Gascoigne has lifted the lid on the uncomfortable first encounter that led to his abrupt departure from Everton, shedding light on his initial disappointment with David Moyes’ managerial approach.
Gascoigne, a footballing icon affectionately known as “Gazza”, had a brief spell at Everton between 2000 and 2002, nearing the twilight of his illustrious career. While his time in Merseyside featured only 37 appearances and a single goal, his memories of the club — and its managers — remain vivid.
Reflecting on his exit, Gascoigne revealed that Moyes’ no-nonsense attitude upon taking over at Goodison Park didn’t sit well with him. Recalling Moyes’ first words as manager, Gazza said:
> “He walked in and said, ‘I’m the manager. I saw how you played Saturday, don’t mess about with me.’”
That blunt introduction instantly soured Gascoigne’s view of Moyes, who at the time lacked top-flight playing experience and had yet to manage an elite side. With a squad full of seasoned internationals, including Gascoigne himself, the approach felt heavy-handed.
Though Moyes later reached out in an attempt to reconcile, inviting Gazza back to the club, the damage was done. Gascoigne had already made his decision to leave.
Despite the rocky past, Gazza had kind words for Moyes’ current tenure at Everton, suggesting the Scotsman has matured over time and is doing well in stabilising the team. Moyes now enjoys more harmony with his players — a contrast to the turmoil seen under Sean Dyche, where tactical disagreements and player discontent plagued the dressing room.
As Everton aims to build on a respectable 13th-place finish, Moyes will be keen to preserve team morale and avoid repeating the kind of friction that once sent a club legend packing.
