AliousBrighton forward Yankuba Minteh has opened up about his bittersweet debut Premier League campaign following Albion’s emphatic 4-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur — a result that capped off their season but wasn’t enough to secure European qualification.
Signed from Newcastle United for £30 million in July 2024, the Gambian winger showed flashes of brilliance throughout the season. In 32 league appearances, Minteh notched six goals and four assists — solid numbers for a 19-year-old in his first top-flight season. However, by his own standards, he fell short.
Speaking after the final game, the ambitious winger admitted he had set himself a higher benchmark: “My target was ten goals and ten assists, but I didn’t reach that. I got six goals and four assists. I’m a bit disappointed, but this is what I get. Hopefully next season, I’ll get it.”
Despite the personal setback, Minteh expressed gratitude for the support he’s received, highlighting the challenges of adjusting to a new league, club, and tactical system: “It’s not easy. This is my first season. I’m very happy to have played, scored, and contributed. The fans have been amazing — always behind us. Next season, we’ll work even harder to give them more.”
Brighton’s final-day triumph at Spurs showcased the team’s attacking depth and spirit. After falling behind early due to a clumsy penalty, Albion responded with energy and control. Jack Hinshelwood netted twice, including a spectacular backheel, while Diego Gomez capped the win with a stunning long-range strike. Matt O’Riley also coolly converted from the spot.
Even with the dominant display, results elsewhere meant Brighton ended their campaign in 8th place, just shy of a European spot — a tough pill to swallow after a season of progress and memorable performances.
Still, with rising stars like Minteh hungry for more and determined to improve, there’s every reason for optimism at the Amex. The 2025/26 season already promises to be one of high ambition, and Minteh’s personal targets may well align with Brighton’s collective push for continental football.
