Rangers will now need to shift focus in their managerial hunt, as former title-winning boss Steven Gerrard has reportedly ruled himself out of a return to the Ibrox dugout.
Despite being the bookies’ favourite and fan-backed frontrunner to replace Philippe Clement—who departed the club in February—Gerrard has opted to remain in the Middle East, ending hopes of a second managerial spell in Glasgow.
Since guiding Rangers to their only Scottish Premiership title in over a decade back in 2021, Gerrard had remained a popular figure at the club.
His potential return was endorsed by former chairman Dave King, and discussions had reportedly been held between his representatives and the Rangers hierarchy. However, Gerrard asked for time to consider his options.
According to Keith Jackson of the *Daily Record*, the ex-Liverpool captain is now expected to formally withdraw from contention.
Key to his decision was his family’s reluctance to relocate from the Middle East—particularly his wife, Alex, who was reportedly hesitant about returning to Scotland at this stage.
While Gerrard has left Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq, he’s decided to stay based in the region for at least another year.
Contrary to speculation, his decision is not related to UK tax issues, as he is no longer subject to penalties on earnings accrued while managing in Saudi Arabia.
The door remains open for a future return to Ibrox, but it won’t be this summer.
Gerrard is also being linked with a potential assistant manager role under Arne Slot, who recently joined Liverpool—especially as John Heitinga is tipped to take over at Ajax following Francesco Farioli’s departure.
With Gerrard out of the race, Rangers’ managerial shortlist has widened to include current Southampton manager Russell Martin and Real Madrid assistant Davide Ancelotti.
