Former Ajax manager Francesco Farioli appears to have ruled out the possibility of taking charge at Rangers, as reports from Italy suggest his focus is firmly set on securing a move to the English Premier League.
Earlier reports from Scottish media on Thursday evening claimed that Rangers had initiated contact with the 36-year-old Italian and even held preliminary talks over a potential appointment at Ibrox. The club remains in search of a permanent successor following Barry Ferguson’s stint as caretaker manager.
However, Italian outlet *Tuttomercatoweb* has since poured cold water on those claims. According to their update, while Rangers have expressed interest, Farioli has already dismissed the idea of heading to Glasgow. The report adds that the young tactician is instead prioritising a move to the Premier League, where he believes the opportunities align better with his ambitions and coaching philosophy.
Farioli recently departed Ajax after a disappointing end to the season saw the club miss out on the Eredivisie title. Despite their collapse, the decision to part ways wasn’t based on results. Instead, it stemmed from philosophical disagreements with the Ajax board over the team’s direction and playing style.
On the same evening rumours were swirling about Rangers talks, Farioli was reportedly spotted dining in Florence. Though he’s from nearby Lucca and was simply visiting home in Tuscany, the timing further signals his lack of urgency to engage with Rangers’ proposal.
With Farioli seemingly off the table, Rangers may now need to shift their focus elsewhere in their managerial search, as their top target sets his sights on England’s top flight.
