Former Rangers striker Kyle Lafferty believes Russell Martin can reignite a serious title challenge at Ibrox — but only if the club’s hierarchy delivers major financial backing.
Lafferty, who played under Martin during their time together at Norwich City, is confident the new Gers boss can reduce the sizable gap to Celtic from last season. However, he insists that Martin’s ability to implement his attacking philosophy hinges on the support he receives from the club’s new ownership, led by American investor Andrew Cavenagh.
Speaking to Record Sport, Lafferty stated: “You can throw in a manager and make promises, but without real investment, it’ll be a struggle. Rangers were 17 points behind Celtic last season — completely unacceptable. That can’t happen again.”
He added that, while Martin will bring an exciting, possession-based style to Ibrox, results must still be the priority. Lafferty warned that style alone won’t satisfy supporters, stressing that only trophies will do after years of underachievement.
“This is going to be a major change for the club. Russell will want to play attractive football, but he’s fully aware that winning silverware is what matters most,” said Lafferty. “Too many managers have come and gone without delivering. Russ has to break that cycle.”
The Northern Irishman, who had two spells with the Glasgow giants, believes the fans will rally behind Martin — especially if the board provides him with the tools to succeed.
“If the owners back him properly, I’ve no doubt the gap to Celtic will close this season. He just needs the right players to make it happen,” Lafferty concluded.
