UNSTOPPABLE BLACK CATS: Croatia Ace on the Market – Black Cats Plot Ambitious Transfer Raid!

From International Duty to the Stadium of Light? Sunderland Target Croatian Defensive Anchor Duje Ćaleta-Car

Sunderland appear to be intensifying their efforts to bolster their squad ahead of their return to Premier League football, and a new name has reportedly entered the frame: Croatia international Duje Ćaleta-Car.

According to French outlet *Footmercato*, the experienced centre-back has been placed on the transfer list by Olympique Lyonnais, and Sunderland are believed to be among the clubs considering a summer move. The 28-year-old, who boasts 32 caps for Croatia, could offer a blend of top-flight pedigree and international experience to a Sunderland side keen to strengthen its backline.

Ćaleta-Car’s journey has taken him through some of Europe’s top leagues. After impressing with Red Bull Salzburg and then Marseille, he made the jump to the Premier League in 2022, signing for Southampton. However, his stint in England was short-lived, with the Saints suffering relegation at the end of his debut season. Lyon picked him up on a season-long loan, eventually making the move permanent for a fee reported to be around €5 million, including add-ons. Despite that investment, the defender has since fallen out of favour under new Lyon boss Paulo Fonseca, prompting the French club to make him available for sale.

With two years still remaining on his contract, Ćaleta-Car could represent a financially viable target for Sunderland, especially considering their need for Premier League-calibre reinforcements. The club is aiming to add at least one centre-back this summer, with sporting director Kristjaan Speakman confirming a wide-ranging search is underway.

“We’re looking at all the players, and I’ve been consistent in saying I won’t talk about individuals, especially from other clubs,” Speakman stated. “What we’re doing is identifying the gaps at Premier League level and solving those problems. It’s about achieving the right balance for the top flight.”

Sunderland have already been linked with several central defensive options during the early stages of the window, including Montpellier’s Modibo Sagnan and Millwall’s Japhet Tanganga. Tanganga, notably, has a modest release clause of just over £1 million for Premier League clubs, although Crystal Palace currently seem to be leading the chase for his signature.

Despite the competition, Ćaleta-Car’s availability and experience could make him a compelling option for the Black Cats as they seek to assemble a squad capable of holding its own in England’s top tier.
