Luciano Vulcano, Sunderland’s newly appointed first-team coach, has heaped praise on Black Cats’ manager Regis Le Bris, calling him “one of the most intelligent” coaches he’s ever collaborated with. The Italian tactician, whose coaching résumé boasts high-profile roles at AC Milan and Saudi Arabian powerhouse Al Nassr—Cristiano Ronaldo’s current club—joined Le Bris’ backroom setup earlier this summer.
Despite years of working alongside world-renowned players and staff, Vulcano admitted he’s been deeply impressed by Le Bris’ tactical clarity and, more importantly, his human touch. In an interview with Sunderland’s official website, Vulcano shared:
“Regis is exceptionally bright—among the smartest I’ve worked with. He’s calm, laser-focused, and has a precise vision for how the game should be played. But what stands out most is his humility and communication. He listens, explains with great clarity, and earns players’ respect.”
Vulcano emphasized that Le Bris is more than just a tactician; he’s a genuine people manager. “He combines football intelligence with emotional intelligence,” Vulcano continued. “It’s refreshing to work with someone who sees the game so well but also values people the way he does.”
Reflecting on his early days at Sunderland, Vulcano said he’s been warmly welcomed by everyone at the club. Now in Portugal for pre-season, he praised the environment: “It’s the perfect setting for the players—great weather, great atmosphere. It’s a strong foundation for what we hope to achieve.”
On the broader ambitions, Vulcano expressed his enthusiasm about coaching in English football. “The Premier League is the dream,” he said. “It’s the most competitive league on the planet. This is a massive opportunity—not just to contribute to Sunderland’s journey, but also to grow personally and professionally. I want to get everything I can from this experience—squeeze the lemon.”
When asked about his time working with Cristiano Ronaldo at Al Nassr, Vulcano shared rare behind-the-scenes insight into the five-time Ballon d’Or winner. “Cristiano is an elite professional. His dedication is on another level—ice baths every night, recovery routines daily. At nearly 40, he still plays every match at the highest level. He taught me that success isn’t just about talent—it’s about maintaining the highest standards, every single day.”
He concluded with a personal reflection: “Working with Ronaldo put me under intense pressure. But pressure either breaks you or shapes you. I chose to grow—and that mindset is what I now bring to Sunderland.”
