Sunderland will travel to the City Ground this Saturday, September 27, for their Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest on Matchday 6.
The Black Cats have made a strong start to life back in the top flight, collecting eight points from their opening five games, including a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa last weekend.
Forest, managed by Ange Postecoglou, are slightly behind on five points, having also drawn 1-1 in their last outing against Burnley.
In a timely boost, Sunderland head coach Régis Le Bris confirmed that Luke O’Nien could return to action for the fixture.
The 30-year-old midfielder has been sidelined since suffering a shoulder injury during the Championship playoff final in May but has now rejoined full training.
“Luke is fully integrated with the squad again, so he’s an option for Saturday,” Le Bris told reporters.
However, the Black Cats will still be without several key players.
Dennis Cirkin, Leo Hjelde, Aji Alese, Romaine Mundle, and Habib Diarra all remain sidelined, while Reinildo begins a three-match suspension following his red card against Aston Villa.
Despite the absences, Le Bris expressed confidence in his squad depth, pointing to the versatility of Lutsharel Geertruida and Arthur Masuaku across the defensive line.
Forest, meanwhile, could also be without a vital player, with Ange Postecoglou admitting Douglas Luiz faces a strong chance of missing the clash.
