HWALiverpool legend Steven Gerrard has emerged as one of the leading contenders to replace Russell Martin as Rangers manager — but several major complications could hinder a sensational reunion at Ibrox.
Rangers are once again in search of a new boss after sacking their fourth permanent manager in under three years. Russell Martin’s turbulent reign ended abruptly on Sunday, lasting just 123 days, the shortest in the club’s modern history. The ex-Southampton coach managed only one Premiership victory before fans’ frustrations boiled over into protests demanding his removal.
Currently sitting seventh in the Scottish Premiership and competing in the Europa League after a humiliating 9-1 Champions League play-off loss to Club Brugge, the Glasgow club’s hierarchy are desperate for a steady hand to restore order.
Gerrard in Frame — But It’s Complicated
According to Sky Sports, Rangers are eager to open talks with Gerrard, who is said to be “open to discussions” about a dramatic comeback. The 44-year-old remains highly respected at Ibrox after leading Rangers to their 2021 league title, ending Celtic’s bid for ten-in-a-row.
However, negotiations will be anything but straightforward. Gerrard’s personal situation remains complex, as he and his family are currently settled in Bahrain following his departure from Saudi side Al-Ettifaq in January. Though no longer coaching there, he has built a comfortable life in the Middle East — making relocation to Glasgow a significant decision.
Rangers reportedly approached Gerrard in the summer, before ultimately appointing Martin, but talks failed to progress. This time around, the Liverpool icon is said to want reassurances about the club’s long-term project, given the instability and poor start to the season.
Dyche Among Alternatives
While Gerrard remains the sentimental favourite, Rangers are keeping their options open. Former Everton manager Sean Dyche is seen as another realistic candidate, with his experience in difficult rebuilds considered valuable.
Ex-Celtic striker Chris Sutton believes Dyche would be a pragmatic choice:
“Rangers fans won’t accept drifting through the season. They need someone who can make an impact right away — and Dyche has a record of doing that.”
However, Dyche is reportedly not interested in the position at present. Other potential names include Graham Potter and Kevin Muscat, while Rafa Benitez and Gareth Southgate have been loosely mentioned, though their arrivals appear highly unlikely.
With the club at a crossroads, the next appointment could define Rangers’ short-term future — and while a Gerrard return would electrify the fanbase, the realities off the pitch may prevent the fairytale reunion from happening.
