Jean-Philippe Mateta appears determined to move on from Crystal Palace, with no intention of signing a new deal as he reaches the final year-and-a-half of his current contract. Standard Sport indicates that the striker has not engaged in fresh negotiations since the summer — a telling sign of his future ambitions.
Mateta’s existing deal runs until June 2027, following Palace’s decision last December to activate a one-year extension. However, last week’s reports revealed that the French international is holding out for a more lucrative salary package if he is to remain at Selhurst Park.
The 28-year-old has been a standout performer for Palace over the last couple of seasons, notching nine goals across all competitions this year alone. Having already earned caps for France — scoring twice in three appearances — Mateta is aiming to impress enough to secure a spot in Didier Deschamps’ World Cup squad.
Mateta has openly spoken about his ambitions for elite football, stating in October that playing for a Champions League club is a natural aspiration for any driven professional, especially when surrounded by national teammates competing at the highest European level.
The timing of his stance is notable, arriving shortly after Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner publicly expressed frustration with the club’s lack of transfer reinforcement following their 2-1 loss to Manchester United. Glasner, whose own contract ends next summer, emphasized that progress cannot be achieved through patience alone — especially with a demanding match schedule.
He argued that the club must invest decisively in January to address shortcomings from the summer window, stressing that Palace must compete every match and secure the necessary resources to maintain momentum. Glasner also acknowledged his responsibility to adapt and make tactical changes when needed but reiterated that waiting passively is not an option.
With January approaching, Mateta’s refusal to extend his contract and his clear ambitions beyond Selhurst Park place Crystal Palace in a pivotal position: make a compelling offer — or risk losing their in-form striker to a club offering Champions League glory.
