Brighton owner Tony Bloom could be heading into a complex and potentially delicate situation following serious claims made about his alleged involvement in a covert football betting operation. The allegations have prompted debate across the game, despite Bloom strongly denying any wrongdoing.
Former Everton, Aston Villa and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness has weighed in on the matter, offering his assessment in an exclusive interview with *Football Insider*. According to Wyness, Bloom is widely regarded as one of football’s sharpest owners — but even the most careful operators can find themselves exposed if events unfold beyond their control.
Bloom, who has owned Brighton since 2009, has been accused of being the beneficial owner of a secret £600million gambling syndicate used to place bets on football matches. The 55-year-old has rejected the claims, insisting he has never wagered on Brighton fixtures and has complied fully with all relevant regulations.
Wyness believes Bloom would have been fully aware of football’s betting rules and the risks involved. However, he suggests the real danger lies in whether any betting activity may have taken place without Bloom’s direct knowledge or approval. If even a single instance of that could be proven, it could create complications — regardless of intent.
Speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness stressed the need for caution while legal processes continue. He acknowledged Bloom’s public statement dismissing the allegations and noted that, based on current information, the betting activity appears to have involved matches not connected to Brighton or potentially even the Premier League — a crucial distinction when it comes to FA regulations.
In Wyness’ view, Bloom’s reputation and track record suggest he would have taken extensive measures to remain within the rules. Still, the uncertainty surrounding the syndicate’s operations is where the potential risk lies, particularly if others acted independently.
Away from the controversy, Bloom continues to receive praise for his football investments. In 2025, he committed more than £9 million to Scottish Premiership side Hearts, acquiring a 29 per cent stake. The Edinburgh club are currently enjoying a remarkable campaign, sitting three points clear of Celtic at the top of the table and having already defeated the reigning champions twice this season.
Hearts are now chasing a historic achievement — becoming the first club outside the Old Firm to win the Scottish title since Aberdeen in 1985. Bloom’s influence has been credited with helping to drive that progress.
His ownership of Brighton has also been widely lauded. Under Bloom, the Seagulls have climbed from League One to an established Premier League side, earning a reputation for smart recruitment, financial stability and strong governance. Those credentials have left the club well positioned for the introduction of an Independent Regulator.
