The January transfer window is fast approaching, and one of West Ham’s brightest young talents is already being tipped for a possible departure. The 21-year-old midfielder has been linked with a return to Bristol City, where he spent last season on loan and left a strong impression, with the Robins reportedly eager to welcome him back to Ashton Gate.
Since returning to the London Stadium in the summer, opportunities have been limited. A frustrating injury setback disrupted his momentum, and while he has been named among the substitutes on several occasions under Nuno Espírito Santo, a senior appearance has so far eluded him this season.
That lack of minutes is in stark contrast to his previous campaign. During his spell with Bristol City, he showcased his quality and maturity, earning admiration from supporters who hoped the club would secure his services beyond the end of the loan. When available, he has also continued to shine at youth level for West Ham, most notably scoring a decisive goal against Colchester to book the young Hammers’ place in the EFL Trophy last 16.
Nuno has not been shy about promoting youth, handing first-team debuts to Freddie Potts, Mohamadou Kanté and Ezra Mayers this term. However, despite being highly rated within the academy, Earthy remains on the outside looking in. As a result, he has joined teenager Luis Guilherme among those being linked with a potential move away.
Allowing him to leave now, though, would be a serious misstep. Earthy is widely regarded as one of the most exciting prospects to emerge from West Ham’s youth system in recent years. His intelligent movement, creative vision and eye for goal offer qualities the senior side has often lacked this season.
Concerns over his injury history are understandable, but they should not outweigh his obvious potential. Rather than cashing in prematurely, Nuno would be better served keeping him at the club and gradually introducing him into the first-team picture before the campaign concludes.
With Lucas Paquetá’s long-term future at the club far from guaranteed, Earthy could soon become an important understudy — or even develop into a genuine alternative — should the Brazilian move on. He has already shown he can make an impact at the highest level, having found the net in one of his three brief Premier League outings.
Given his talent and ceiling, selling him in January for a likely modest return would make little sense. West Ham would be wiser to show patience and trust in a young player who could yet play a significant role in the club’s future.
