Wolves’ miserable Premier League campaign has sparked fresh uncertainty over the future of midfielder Marshall Munetsi, with reports suggesting he could be on the move when the January transfer window opens.
Rooted to the bottom of the table with just two points, Wolves are still searching for their first league win of the season and find themselves deep in the relegation zone alongside Burnley and West Ham.
The club recently turned to Rob Edwards in an attempt to arrest their alarming slide.
Appointed last month, Edwards replaced Vitor Pereira after leaving his role at Middlesbrough in the Championship.
While results have yet to improve, there were signs of encouragement in Wolves’ narrow 2–1 defeat away to Arsenal, where they delivered a spirited performance despite coming away empty-handed.
However, the growing pressure surrounding the club’s league position could soon have consequences off the pitch.
According to French outlet L’Equipe, Munetsi may be among those considering their options, with several Ligue 1 sides reportedly monitoring his situation.
The report claims the “deteriorating” circumstances at Molineux could prompt the Zimbabwe international to seek a January departure, despite being under contract until the summer of 2028.
Munetsi, 29, arrived at Wolves just over a year ago from Stade de Reims in a deal worth around £17 million.
Signed to add experience and energy to the midfield, he has featured 26 times across all competitions, contributing four goals. His reputation was forged in Ligue 1, where he impressed consistently after joining Reims from Orlando Pirates in 2019.
During his time in France, he became a key figure, making 159 appearances and scoring 21 goals.
On the international stage, Munetsi is also a seasoned performer, having earned 35 caps for Zimbabwe.
His versatility and physical presence quickly made him a regular option following his move to England, but Wolves’ ongoing struggles have now cast doubt over whether he will remain part of their long-term plans.
Should a concrete offer arrive in January, Wolves may be forced into a difficult decision.
Cashing in on Munetsi could create both financial flexibility and squad space, allowing Edwards to reshape the team with players better suited to his vision.
With relegation to the Championship a genuine threat, a winter sale might even be viewed as a pragmatic move, particularly if Munetsi would likely depart next summer in the event of the drop.
When Munetsi was signed, Wolves’ hierarchy spoke glowingly about the acquisition.
Chairman Jeff Shi highlighted the effort made to secure the midfielder on deadline day, stressing the importance of bringing in experience at a crucial point in the season.
Former sporting director Matt Hobbs also praised Munetsi’s all-round qualities, describing him as physically equipped for the demands of the Premier League and a valuable addition to the squad.
For now, Wolves must attempt to refocus on the pitch.
They return to action this weekend with a home clash against Brentford, a fixture they will view as a prime opportunity to finally register their first league victory of the campaign ahead of Christmas.
