Brennan Johnson’s future at Tottenham Hotspur is fast becoming one of the talking points ahead of the January transfer window, with multiple clubs now circling the Welsh forward after a frustrating start to the season in north London.
Only months ago, Johnson was enjoying the finest moment of his Spurs career. In May, he wrote his name into the club’s history by scoring the decisive goal against Manchester United in the Europa League final in Bilbao. That strike capped off an outstanding campaign, as the 24-year-old ended the season as Tottenham’s leading scorer with 18 goals across all competitions.
On the back of that success, expectations were high that Johnson would cement himself as a key figure moving forward. However, the arrival of Thomas Frank has altered his trajectory. Despite Spurs competing on multiple fronts, Johnson has found regular minutes hard to come by under the new head coach. He has started just six of Tottenham’s 17 Premier League matches so far, slipping behind Mohammed Kudus, Wilson Odobert, Randal Kolo Muani and Mathys Tel in the attacking hierarchy.
The lack of consistent game time has inevitably led to growing frustration for the pacey attacker, and speculation around a potential move away from Spurs has gathered momentum as a result.
Brentford and Ipswich Join Crystal Palace in Johnson Chase
Crystal Palace have already been credited with strong interest in Johnson. The Eagles are eager to strengthen their wide options after Ismaila Sarr’s departure for the Africa Cup of Nations, which could sideline him for up to a month. Palace boss Oliver Glasner is believed to be keen on bringing Johnson to Selhurst Park once the transfer window opens on January 1.
However, Palace are no longer alone in the race. According to an exclusive report from Football Insider, both Brentford and Ipswich Town have now entered the picture. The two clubs are exploring the possibility of signing Johnson on loan, adding further pressure on Spurs as they weigh up their options ahead of the winter window.
Tottenham, for their part, have yet to make a final decision on whether to allow the winger to depart mid-season. Thomas Frank recently addressed the situation, insisting he remains pleased with Johnson’s overall contribution and would prefer to keep him as part of the squad, especially with a congested fixture list looming. At the same time, the Dane admitted it is only natural for a player in Johnson’s position to be unhappy with limited minutes and to consider his future elsewhere — particularly with a World Cup on the horizon next summer.
Is January the Right Time for Spurs to Let Johnson Go?
From Johnson’s perspective, a move away in the New Year may make sense. At 24, he is entering a crucial phase of his career and needs regular starts to continue his development and fulfil his considerable potential. Remaining a bit-part player is far from ideal, especially with the 2026 World Cup approaching and international ambitions at stake.
For Tottenham, the situation is more complex. Johnson is under contract until 2028, which puts the club in a strong negotiating position should they decide to cash in. A sale or loan move could free up funds to be reinvested in a suitable replacement for the second half of the season and beyond.
However, unless Spurs are confident they can adequately replace him, the club may be reluctant to sanction his exit despite mounting interest from Premier League and Championship sides. With several suitors now lining up, Johnson’s future looks increasingly uncertain — and the coming weeks could prove decisive for both player and club.
