Regis Le Bris has acknowledged that Arthur Masuaku’s time at Sunderland could potentially come to an end during the January transfer window, admitting the full-back’s situation is one that remains under review.
Masuaku, who joined the Black Cats in the summer, has found regular minutes hard to come by. The defender has not featured for Sunderland since October, with fierce competition in the defensive unit limiting his chances to establish himself in the side.
Speaking candidly, Le Bris revealed that he has already held discussions with Masuaku regarding his future at the club. Those talks took place shortly before the player departed to represent his country at the Africa Cup of Nations, highlighting that both parties are aware of the uncertainty surrounding the coming weeks.
According to the Sunderland head coach, the depth and quality of options in defence have made it one of the most competitive areas of his squad. While several players have built momentum through consistent performances, others—Masuaku included—have struggled to break into the starting line-up despite their individual quality.
Le Bris was keen to stress that a lack of minutes does not reflect a lack of trust in the player. He described Masuaku as an important member of the squad, but admitted opportunities have been limited. The January window, he explained, will provide a chance for open and honest discussions about what works best for both the player and the club, without any predetermined outcome.
The French coach emphasised that any decision will depend on alignment between Sunderland’s collective needs and Masuaku’s personal ambitions. If both sides feel their objectives match, the situation can continue as it is. If not, alternative options may be explored.
Le Bris also underlined his preference for stability and continuity within the team. He pointed out that even when players are not at their best in isolated matches, consistency is often rewarded with continued selection. In Masuaku’s case, however, the chance to build that rhythm has not yet arrived.
