UEFA have officially confirmed Newcastle United’s Champions League squad for the remainder of the 2025/26 season following the conclusion of the league phase. As per UEFA regulations, clubs still in the competition were allowed to register up to three new eligible A list players by 24:00 CET on Thursday, 5 February. Newcastle, like the other 35 remaining teams, submitted their squad adjustments in time for the knockout rounds.
The newly announced Newcastle United Champions League squad features 21 players on List A, which represents the club’s main selection for European matches. While UEFA permits up to 25 players on List A, including at least eight locally trained players, Newcastle were limited to 21 due to eligibility criteria and availability.

Notably, Eddie Howe made some adjustments compared to the original League phase squad. John Ruddy has been added to replace Emil Krafth, who is currently sidelined through injury. This move also ensures Newcastle have adequate senior goalkeeping coverage after Max Thompson went on loan to Ayr United. Four other senior players — Mark Gillespie, Harrison Ashby, Jamaal Lascelles, and John Ruddy (originally omitted) — were previously left out of List A but now see at least one return to the squad.
In addition to List A, Newcastle also maintain a List B of younger players, including talents such as Lewis Miley and Lewis Hall. UEFA rules allow List B submissions to be made up to 24 hours before each match, unlike the fixed List A deadline. Players on List B must meet age and club registration requirements, ensuring they are eligible for senior competition if called upon.
UEFA’s squad regulations are detailed and strict. Clubs are responsible for submitting full player details, medical verification, and eligibility confirmations. List A must include a minimum of two goalkeepers, while clubs may replace goalkeepers in cases of long-term injury or permanent transfers, following UEFA procedures. Clubs failing to comply risk fielding ineligible players, which can result in sanctions.
Newcastle’s updated Champions League squad now positions the Magpies to approach the knockout phase with a balanced mix of senior experience and promising young talent. The squad reflects Eddie Howe’s careful management of UEFA rules while ensuring the club remains competitive on Europe’s biggest stage.
