Leicester City supporters who were chanting for a 9-0 rout against Southampton on Tuesday night are now left red-faced after a stunning collapse at the King Power Stadium.
Journalist Alfie House reported that fans were hoping to recreate the historic 9-0 demolition of the Saints from October 2019, when Ayoze Perez and Jamie Vardy both netted hat-tricks in Leicester’s record Premier League victory at St. Mary’s.
This time, however, the Foxes’ early dominance was undone in dramatic fashion. Goals from Ross Stewart, Jack Stephens, Ryan Manning, and Shea Charles fueled an incredible second-half comeback for Southampton, leaving Leicester without a single point.
Leicester had raced into a 3-0 lead inside the first 30 minutes thanks to strikes from Divine Mukasa, Patson Daka, and Abdul Fatawu. Supporters could be heard chanting “we want nine,” buoyed by what looked like a commanding victory.
But Andy King’s side, still reeling from Martí Cifuentes’ recent sacking following a 2-1 defeat to Oxford United, failed to close out the game. Stewart’s 61st-minute goal sparked Southampton’s resurgence, culminating in a stoppage-time winner that lifted Tonda Eckert’s team to ninth in the Championship.
The defeat marks Leicester’s fourth consecutive league loss, leaving the club perilously close to the relegation zone. While they remain just above it on goal difference, the embarrassing turnaround at home will infuriate fans, who saw a comfortable lead slip away in front of their eyes.
Adding salt to the wound, the two teams are set to meet again this weekend in the FA Cup’s fourth round at St. Mary’s, giving Southampton a chance to continue their revenge and Leicester fans yet another reason to be wary.
