Dele Alli was a key figure in Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham side that pushed for both the Premier League title and a place at the summit of European football in the Champions League.
Now 29 and currently without a club, Dele returned to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last weekend for the North London derby. Speaking to the club’s official media channels, he admitted that hearing Spurs fans sing his name still affects him deeply.
Rather than expecting gratitude, Dele insisted he feels he owes the supporters his thanks. He described the affection he received throughout his time in north London as overwhelming and unforgettable.
The former England international quickly became a fan favourite after joining from MK Dons in 2015. His confidence, flair and fearless style instantly resonated with the White Hart Lane crowd, and he appeared destined for a glittering career at the very top.
However, a combination of off-field struggles, injuries and a dip in form led to a sharp decline in recent years.
Dele explained that watching clips online of fans chanting his name reminds him of the unique connection he built with them — something that still makes him emotional. He said the continued appreciation means a great deal to him.
A natural fit at Spurs
Looking back, Dele believes his personality aligned perfectly with Tottenham’s identity. Known for playing with freedom and creativity, he felt at home in a club whose motto, “To dare is to do,” mirrored his own approach to the game.
He admitted that his love of entertaining — both on and off the pitch — helped forge that bond with supporters. For Dele, the connection came naturally, making it easy for him to relate to the club and its fans from the very beginning.
