AliousIdrissa Gueye has remained a key figure at Everton FC for several seasons, and his importance to the squad has continued during the current campaign under manager David Moyes.
The Senegal international has frequently partnered James Garner in midfield, forming part of one of Everton’s most reliable areas on the pitch when the team has been performing well. His experience and defensive presence have helped provide balance in the middle of the park.
Gueye’s absence was strongly felt when he left to represent Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations, but since returning he has quickly re-established himself in Moyes’ starting lineup.
Contract Situation Ahead of the Summer
With discussions beginning over his future, Gueye could soon be weighing up his next move as the summer transfer window approaches. His current deal includes an option for an additional year, and there are indications that Everton may look to activate that clause.
Given his continued influence in the squad, extending his stay could be a logical move for the club heading into next season.
Speaking on Toffee TV, presenter Barry Cass suggested the midfielder may well earn another year at the club following a strong return after AFCON.
Everton Could Trigger Extension
The former Aston Villa player signed a fresh one-year deal with Everton in the summer of 2025, extending his time on Merseyside.
Cass praised Gueye’s quality but acknowledged that the 36-year-old may need to be managed more carefully in terms of playing time. He noted that Gueye appeared to regain his best form in matches against Newcastle United and Burnley FC following AFCON, although he felt the midfielder could perhaps have been rested in one of those games.
He also described Gueye as one of Everton’s smartest pieces of business, having contributed significantly during two separate spells with the club, and believes there is a strong possibility he will be handed another one-year extension.
Gueye’s Presence Helps Garner
Even if there are questions about how often he should start, Gueye still offers valuable qualities to Everton’s midfield.
His partnership with Garner, in particular, has proven beneficial. The Senegalese midfielder’s defensive discipline allows his teammates more freedom to push forward. This has helped players like Garner and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall advance into attacking areas and contribute more effectively in the final third.
That tactical balance could be another reason Everton may choose to keep Gueye at the club by activating the option to extend his contract.
