AliousTottenham Hotspur, who ended last season in 17th place, are once again facing a serious relegation threat. With just nine Premier League matches remaining, Spurs sit only one point above the bottom three.
Five of those remaining fixtures will be played away from home — a concern considering Tottenham have earned 19 of their 29 points on the road so far this season.
Their situation could become even more precarious ahead of Sunday’s clash with Liverpool FC at Anfield. Spurs could drop into the relegation zone before kick-off if West Ham United and Nottingham Forest defeat Manchester City and Fulham FC respectively.
The club hoped for a turnaround after dismissing Thomas Frank and appointing Igor Tudor as interim head coach. However, results have yet to improve, with Spurs still searching for their first Premier League victory of 2026.
While relegation might have once seemed unimaginable, the possibility has now been acknowledged within the club. Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville believes Tottenham going down could even have a positive effect on the league’s competitiveness.
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Neville said that although relegation would be painful for Spurs supporters, it could ultimately benefit the Premier League.
He explained that from a competitive standpoint, it would be encouraging to see promoted clubs such as Leeds United and Sunderland AFC survive, especially after fears at the start of the season that newly promoted sides would immediately drop back down.
Neville added that while the league does not necessarily need Tottenham to be relegated, it would be healthy for the competition if teams other than newly promoted sides occasionally went down. However, he admitted it would still be a sad outcome for Spurs, suggesting the club may have been heading in this direction for some time.
