Atlético Madrid’s Ademola Lookman could have ended up at Tottenham Hotspur in the winter market.

The forward left Atalanta for the La Liga side on February 1st and has enjoyed a good run with Diego Simeone’s side.

He’s scored four goals and contributed three assists from 641 minutes from 12 matches for Atlético.

Lookman played 69 minutes in his side’s 5-2 Champions League win over Tottenham last week. He failed to score or contribute an assist, but did well.

Simeone’s side face the north London club in the last 16 second leg on Wednesday. He has another opportunity to get his name on the scoresheet.

Ahead of the European clash, Wednesday’s edition of AS has a report on the 28-year-old’s failed attempts to join Spurs. Their title reads: ‘Lookman faces the team that rejected him twice’.

Ademola Lookman was reportedly offered to Tottenham Hotspur on multiple occasions, but the Premier League club chose not to pursue a deal.

The London-born Nigeria international previously played in England for Charlton Athletic, Everton, Leicester City, and Fulham before joining Atalanta from RB Leipzig for around €15 million in August 2022.

During his time in Italy, Lookman flourished, scoring 55 goals and providing 27 assists in 137 appearances for La Dea. His standout moment came in the 2023/24 season when he netted a hat-trick in the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen.

Despite his success, Lookman pushed to leave Atalanta last summer but was unable to secure a move. He renewed his efforts in the January window and eventually completed a transfer. Earlier reports had linked Tottenham as a possible destination.

According to AS, the forward was presented to Spurs both last summer and again in January, but the club turned him down on both occasions — “despite needing attacking reinforcements and having funds available.”

Instead, Tottenham opted to sign Conor Gallagher from Atlético Madrid for €40 million. The decision to overlook Lookman, particularly during the January window, has since drawn criticism.

The Spanish outlet questioned the move, noting Tottenham’s struggles with injuries and poor form: why pass up an opportunity to sign a player who fit the exact profile they needed? The situation had already arisen in the summer, only to repeat itself months later, with the club again declining the chance.

Since joining Atlético, Lookman has been directly involved in seven goals, underlining his impact. In contrast, Tottenham have managed just nine goals in the same period, with two of those coming against Manchester City on the day Lookman completed his move.

Given his current form, Spurs may come to regret their decision not to bring him back to London — especially if he delivers against Igor Tudor’s side. His market value has already risen to €40 million, an increase of €5 million since arriving in Spain.
