It is fair to say that Palhinha has played a crucial role at both ends of the pitch for the North Londoners. He has already made 19 league starts for Tottenham this season, while also featuring seven times from the bench. Not only that, but the 30-year-old has managed to score five goals in all competitions, proving that he still has a lot to offer at both ends of the pitch. The Portuguese international has also been deployed as a makeshift centre-back at times, showcasing his versatility for the Lilywhites this season.
Joao Palhinha’s Tottenham future remains uncertain for the time being
Tottenham are fighting hard to maintain their top-flight status this season, with the club sitting just a point above the Premier League drop zone. If they are relegated, the Lilywhites could be forced to part ways with key players in the summer due to significant financial constraints. This comes as bad news for players like Joao Palhinha, who is hoping to extend his stay at N17 beyond this season.
Christian Falk has now reported that Spurs are considering parting ways with the Portuguese international and may allow the midfielder to return to Bayern Munich in the summer. Speaking to CFBayern, Falk said,
“It is TRUE: Palhinha could depart Tottenham in the summer. There is a discussion ongoing at Bayern Munich because they wanted to sell the player to Spurs (as he’s currently on loan). They’d hoped the Premier League club would end up triggering the release clause (about €30m [£25.8m]). It could be that Tottenham won’t look to sign him at the moment, whilst the future of the club remains very open.”
The journalist added,
“From Bayern’s perspective, they’re talking about selling him to another Premier League club if he does come back to Munich. He’s played well in England, and other clubs are watching him and seeing that he’s not the problem at Tottenham. So, Bayern are optimistic that Palhinha won’t return to Germany in the summer and he’ll still be playing in the Premier League next season. But nobody knows if it will still be at Tottenham!”
As per Christian Falk, Bayern Munich were hoping that Spurs would sign Joao Palhinha on a permanent deal in the summer. However, given the current situation the Lilywhites find themselves in, they may opt to part ways with the Portuguese international and send him back to Germany in the coming months. Falk also reports that Bayern have no intention of keeping Palhinha, as the player is attracting strong interest from other Premier League clubs. The 30-year-old could end up remaining in England, but it remains to be seen whether that will be with Tottenham.
The Lilywhites must ensure that they do not end up spending £25.8m on Joao Palhinha in the summer. Signing the midfielder on a permanent deal could prove to be a mistake, as he offers little resale value moving forward. Moreover, there are arguably better options in the market with similar attributes. Recent reports suggest Spurs are interested in signing Sporting CP star Morten Hjulmand. Paying a significant fee for a player of his calibre would make more sense, as he still has his best years ahead of him and could perform the same role as Palhinha in a more effective manner.
