AliousTottenham Hotspur have suffered a setback in their hunt for a new sporting director, after top target Dougie Freedman turned down the role.
The club are in need of a successor to Fabio Paratici, who returned to Italy with ACF Fiorentina shortly after rejoining Spurs in an official capacity.
Freedman, now sporting director at Saudi second-tier side Al-Diriyah Club, is reportedly earning a significant salary, meaning Tottenham would have needed to present a substantial offer to lure the 51-year-old. However, no such approach appears to have been made. Instead, the recruitment process—led by Johan Lange and CEO Vinai Venkatesham—has shifted toward alternative candidates, though these options have not inspired much confidence.
Paratici’s short-lived partnership with Lange proved ineffective, and his exit may have disrupted Tottenham’s plans during the January transfer window. The club’s limited winter activity failed to address squad depth issues, with new arrivals Conor Gallagher and João Souza making minimal impact so far.
Given the importance of this appointment, missing out on Freedman—widely respected for his talent identification—feels like a major blow. According to Miguel Delaney, the former Crystal Palace FC director has declined the opportunity.
Attention has now turned to Sebastian Kehl, who recently left Borussia Dortmund after several years in a senior role, including four as sporting director. Kehl played a key role in reshaping Dortmund’s transfer strategy, moving away from developing young prospects toward signing more established players—a shift that frustrated supporters and contributed to a broader identity crisis at the club. His departure was reportedly welcomed by many fans, which raises concerns about his suitability.
Another name under consideration is Paul Winstanley of Chelsea FC. However, his track record has also been questioned, with Chelsea spending heavily under Todd Boehly without yet assembling a squad capable of consistently competing for major honours.
With doubts surrounding the leading alternatives, Tottenham’s decision-making in this crucial appointment is under intense scrutiny, and there is a growing sense that further missteps could follow.
