DYCHE DROPS BOMBSHELL! Shock Branthwaite Benching EXPLAINED! | “I’m AMAZED By What Happened…” | Inside The DRAMATIC Last-Minute Decision

Everton manager Sean Dyche expressed frustration over a crucial refereeing decision in his team’s 1-0 defeat at Southampton, which ended their unbeaten streak. The key moment came when substitute Beto was fouled by Jan Bednarek while breaking through on goal, but the Southampton defender escaped with just a yellow card.

Match officials, including VAR, determined that Taylor Harwood-Bellis’s covering position meant Bednarek wasn’t the last defender. The game-changing moment was followed by Beto hitting the crossbar, before Adam Armstrong scored the decisive goal for Southampton with five minutes remaining. Beto’s late equalizer was also ruled out for offside after VAR review.

Dyche was particularly vocal about the Bednarek incident, drawing on his defensive experience: “When you are an ex-defender, you are thinking you are off as soon as you do that.” He also highlighted a broader concern about officiating, suggesting players who try to stay on their feet – like Beto in this instance – are being disadvantaged compared to those who go down easily.

The defeat marked Southampton’s first victory since their promotion, with Everton missing several key players. Abdoulaye Doucoure was absent due to injury, while Iliman Ndiaye had to be substituted after suffering a dead leg.

Regarding the notable omission of Jarrad Branthwaite – the emerging talent who recently received an England call-up and attracted Manchester United’s interest – Dyche’s explanation was straightforward. He pointed to the team’s recent five-game unbeaten run and the strong performances of center-backs Michael Keane and James Tarkowski as justification for maintaining the defensive partnership.
