END OF THE ROAD: “Palace Panic? Newcastle Ready to Swoop Palace’s Defensive Rock for Bargain Price as Contract Runs Down”

END OF THE ROAD: “Palace Panic? Newcastle Ready to Swoop Palace’s Defensive Rock for Bargain Price as Contract Runs Down”

Newcastle United are eyeing a potential January swoop for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, with the Magpies believing they can secure the England international’s signature for a surprisingly modest £30 million.

This valuation represents a dramatic decrease from Palace’s previous £70 million asking price during the summer transfer window, when Newcastle’s substantial bid of £65 million was rebuffed.

The significant reduction in price is largely attributed to Guehi’s contract situation, as he enters the final 18 months of his current deal with no apparent interest in extending his stay at Selhurst Park.

Newcastle’s director Paul Mitchell has personally championed the pursuit of the 24-year-old defender, who has proven himself as both a cornerstone of Palace’s defense and an established England international since his £23.34 million move from Chelsea in 2021.

Guehi’s appeal to Newcastle is multifaceted. Beyond his impressive credentials – including 109 Premier League appearances and 22 England caps – he offers a compelling solution to the club’s defensive crisis, with both Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman sidelined with long-term injuries.

The defender’s versatility is particularly attractive, as he combines defensive reliability with attacking threat, having already netted twice this season.

Despite interest from Premier League rivals Liverpool and Tottenham, Newcastle remain confident in their position as frontrunners for Guehi’s signature.

The combination of his waning contract, their pressing defensive needs, and their strong negotiating position makes the Magpies optimistic about securing a deal that would not only address their immediate defensive concerns but also support their long-term ambitions.

Guehi’s consistent performances, including starting every Premier League game this season for Palace, suggest he could seamlessly integrate into Eddie Howe’s squad while representing excellent value at the reduced price point.
