As Manchester United prepares for a new chapter under incoming manager Ruben Amorim, following Erik ten Hag’s departure and Ruud van Nistelrooy’s caretaker stint, the club’s transfer plans are coming into focus.
Among their primary targets is Sunderland’s promising youngster Chris Rigg, who has attracted attention from several Premier League powerhouses including Arsenal, Liverpool, and Newcastle United.
However, TBR Football’s sources reveal that Sunderland have taken a firm stance regarding their midfield prodigy’s future. The Black Cats, currently leading the Championship table, are unwilling to entertain any January transfer discussions for Rigg.
Their position extends beyond just mid-season moves; they’re equally resistant to engaging in talks about end-of-season transfers, preferring to maintain complete focus on their promotion campaign.
This stance aligns with Rigg’s own mindset, as the young talent is reportedly content to concentrate on Sunderland’s promotion push. Should the club secure Premier League status, there’s a strong possibility he might extend his stay at the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland is applying the same approach to another coveted young talent, Jobe Bellingham – the 19-year-old brother of Real Madrid star Jude – who has drawn interest from Premier League clubs Crystal Palace and West Ham United, as well as European sides Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig, and Marseille.
The timing of Manchester United’s interest is particularly challenging, given Sunderland’s current position atop the Championship table in an intensely competitive promotion race.
With just two points separating them from third-placed Leeds United, and seventh-placed Middlesbrough only seven points behind, the Black Cats are prioritizing their promotion campaign over any transfer negotiations.
This situation presents a significant obstacle for United’s January transfer ambitions, despite their desire for a fresh start under Amorim, who is set to make his managerial debut against Ipswich Town.
