Sunderland icon Jimmy Montgomery has voiced cautious optimism about the Black Cats’ promotion prospects, acknowledging the tough challenges ahead while expressing confidence that the team will remain in the play-off race this season.
Currently sitting at the top of the Championship table, Sunderland have suffered just two defeats so far but face a grueling series of fixtures. They will travel to face Millwall and Sheffield United, with a crucial home match against West Brom sandwiched between, all before the end of November.
Speaking to *The Echo* at an event celebrating the return of the beloved play *The Sunderland Story* to The Empire Theatre, Montgomery and his fellow 1973 FA Cup winner Micky Horswill discussed Sunderland’s campaign so far and their chances of securing promotion.
#### **Cautious Optimism for Promotion**
Reflecting on Sunderland’s youthful squad, Horswill noted their noticeable physical and mental growth over the past year. “Last year, the team was very, very young. Players like Rigg were breaking through at just 15 or 16 years old, and it’s tough to maintain such a high level at that age, which is likely why the team faded towards the end. This year, they look stronger and more mature. Players like Rigg and Bellingham now seem like proper men.”
Montgomery agreed, highlighting the rapid development that comes with consistent game time and daily training. “A year in football makes a huge difference. The more matches you play, the more experience you gain, and that’s evident with this squad.”

Montgomery praised manager Régis Le Bris for his efforts in guiding the team to the top of the table. However, he warned that the next run of fixtures could test their resilience. “Regis has done a fantastic job so far. Whether we can maintain this momentum, I’m not sure. The next five games will be difficult, with Millwall away, West Brom at home, and then Sheffield United away.”
Despite these challenges, Montgomery expressed confidence that Sunderland would still be in a strong position. “Even if results don’t go our way in this tough period, I believe we won’t drop lower than seventh. We’ll still be in the mix for the play-offs, no matter what.”
