AliousRégis Le Bris has highlighted Leo Hjelde’s vital role within Sunderland’s squad, while acknowledging that the January transfer window could present a difficult decision regarding the 21-year-old defender.
Despite being a key figure off the pitch and a trusted substitute when Sunderland are defending a lead, Hjelde has yet to start a league game this season due to fierce competition in the Black Cats’ backline.
Le Bris has demonstrated his confidence in Hjelde by assigning him the captain’s armband for a Carabao Cup clash earlier this season, showcasing the Norwegian’s influence within the team.
However, limited playing time has raised questions about whether a loan move might better serve Hjelde’s development.
“He’s a very important player for the team and is always ready,” Le Bris explained. “He had a tough pre-season, partly because last season he didn’t play much and had injury issues.
But this season, he’s been crucial in training and in the dressing room. When he’s been called upon during matches, he’s delivered.”
Le Bris admitted that Sunderland’s defensive depth has made it difficult for Hjelde to secure a starting spot.
“He knows this part of the squad is the strongest right now, and he has to be patient. But he understands that opportunities can arise suddenly. Players like him are essential for the team and the club.”
Although Sunderland would likely prefer to keep Hjelde while Dan Ballard recovers from injury, Ballard’s expected return in early January could open the door for Hjelde to seek more regular minutes on loan.
For now, his future remains a delicate balancing act between immediate team needs and long-term development.
