Sunderland is set to bolster their squad this January, focusing on three key areas: a striker, a versatile forward, and a midfielder. While head coach Régis Le Bris initially prioritized attacking reinforcements, injuries to Alan Browne and Chris Rigg have highlighted the need for additional midfield depth.

With Salis Abdul Samed nearing full fitness and expected to debut in the FA Cup against Stoke City, Le Bris is eager to ensure adequate midfield cover for the second half of the season. “Right now, we have only two midfielders at that level,” he explained. “We can develop players like Milan [Aleksic], but that takes time. So, we’re keeping an eye on this area.”

In the attack, Sunderland is targeting both a traditional striker and a versatile forward to enhance their offensive options. However, Le Bris acknowledges the unpredictability of the transfer market. “We’ll see how things unfold,” he said.

Another pressing priority is retaining Sunderland’s top talents. While Le Bris admits he cannot guarantee that all key players will stay, he’s confident in their commitment to the club’s vision. “Interest from big clubs is inevitable when young players perform well, but they understand the positive dynamics here,” he noted.

Le Bris emphasized the importance of unity within the squad, describing the team’s shared vision as a rare strength. “It’s uncommon to create a truly connected project in football today. This is not just about individual careers but a collective human journey they are enjoying together,” he said.

This sense of cohesion, Le Bris believes, will not only help Sunderland retain their stars but also attract new players who align with their vision. “Anyone joining must understand that being part of this shared project is non-negotiable,” he concluded.
