The 24-year-old Frenchman, who previously worked under Sunderland head coach Régis Le Bris at Lorient, has struggled for game time at Roma since his £20m (€23m) move in July. With the club cycling through three different managers during his short tenure, Le Fée has reportedly fallen out of favour under current boss Claudio Ranieri, casting doubt over his future in the Italian capital.
Sunderland Enter the Race
Reports from Italy suggest Sunderland have officially inquired about the midfielder, with Le Bris explicitly requesting his former protégé as a winter signing. Italian journalist Matteo Moretto shared via social media:
“Sunderland have enquired about Enzo Le Fée. It is an explicit request from the coach, Régis Le Bris, who worked with the French midfielder at Lorient. Betis also contacted his entourage but never submitted a formal offer to Roma.”
Betis Talks Collapse
Sunderland’s chances of landing Le Fée appear to have improved further, following a breakdown in negotiations between Roma and Real Betis. According to La Parisien journalist Benjamin Quarez, initial discussions between the Spanish side and Roma seemed promising but ultimately stalled.
Quarez explained:
“Talks with Betis over Enzo Le Fée have not progressed. Midweek discussions seemed to be advancing, but changes in Betis’ strategy reversed the situation. The Spanish club sought additional time to finalize a loan deal with an option to buy, but no agreement was reached.”
Sunderland’s Window of Opportunity
Le Fée has yet to make a single appearance under Ranieri, even sitting out the Roman derby this past weekend. His lack of playing time has made him a target for other clubs, including Sunderland, who are keen to bolster their midfield options as they push for promotion.
Le Fée’s familiarity with Le Bris’ coaching style could be a decisive factor in Sunderland’s favor. With Betis stepping back from negotiations, the Black Cats might seize this opportunity to bring the talented midfielder to Wearside in the January transfer window.
