“Ex-Newcastle Star Drops Bombshell on Exit and Could Now Impact Sunderland’s Promotion Dream!”

Former Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey looks poised for a return to English football after a stint abroad, with Championship promotion contenders Burnley reportedly interested in securing his services. Shelvey, who recently parted ways with Turkish clubs Caykur Rizespor and Eyupspor, has been training with Burnley’s first team under the guidance of manager Scott Parker, himself a former Newcastle player.

Shelvey’s trial comes as Burnley, currently second in the Championship and just one point behind leaders Leeds United, seek reinforcements to boost their promotion bid. Speaking about Shelvey’s potential signing, Parker hinted at the possibility, saying: *“It’s a possibility, yeah. We’ll see where we go. Maybe a little bit of training time and see what happens, but it’s certainly an area we need to look at. It’s still very early stages.”*

The midfielder, 32, has been actively searching for a new club after his brief stints in Turkey. He was recently seen training with fellow former Newcastle player Matty Longstaff at Toronto FC during the MLS off-season and has also been working with northeast football coach Ryan Drane on Tyneside.

Shelvey left Newcastle in January 2023 after seven years at the club, a decision made in pursuit of more game time at Nottingham Forest. Despite Eddie Howe’s reluctance to let him go, Shelvey’s time at Forest was short-lived, and he has since struggled to find stability in his career.

Reflecting on his Newcastle departure, Shelvey expressed gratitude and emotion, saying: *“I never thought I’d find myself typing this out, but my time at Newcastle has come to an end. I would just like to thank every one of you fans that has welcomed me and my family to this amazing football club. I’ve been here for seven years, and it’s been the most amazing time I’ve had in football so far. Two of my children were born here, so the Geordies will always be a part of our lives.”*

If Shelvey secures a contract with Burnley, his influence could extend beyond his new club. With Burnley, Sunderland, and Sheffield United all vying for promotion alongside Newcastle’s fierce rivals Leeds United, Shelvey could play a pivotal role in shaping the final standings. It’s a twist of fate that might see a former Newcastle favorite impact Sunderland’s promotion hopes.
