AliousCrystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has shed light on the club’s decision to secure the services of 19-year-old winger Romain Esse from Millwall, highlighting his “great character” as a key factor in the move.
Esse, Palace’s first acquisition of the January transfer window, joined the Eagles in a deal worth £12 million upfront with an additional £2.5 million in potential add-ons.
Glasner praised Palace’s scouting team for identifying Esse’s potential early, while humorously suggesting that the proximity of Esse’s home to the club’s training ground was a deciding factor.
“I’m thrilled to have Romain join us and start training with the squad,” Glasner said after Palace’s 2-0 victory against West Ham on Saturday, a win that lifted the team to 12th in the Premier League.
“He represents the kind of signing we’re known for — a young, talented player from the Championship who we can help develop further.”
The manager elaborated on Esse’s technical abilities, including his left-footed play, sharp first touch, and knack for finding space on the pitch.
“We’re confident in his skills, and now it’s about working with him to refine and improve those talents. He gives us another dimension in attack,” Glasner added.
When asked why Esse was prioritized over other targets, Glasner jokingly explained, “We decided to sign whoever lived closest to the training ground, and since Romain is just a three-minute walk away, it was the perfect choice. It’s sustainable — no need for a car!”
On a more serious note, Glasner credited Sporting Director Dougie Freedman and the scouting department for their work in identifying Esse as a player who fits the club’s needs.
“Dougie has followed his progress for quite some time, and we knew he brought a unique profile to our team.
While his numbers in the Championship may not stand out, you have to remember he’s only 19,” Glasner said.
The Palace manager also emphasized Esse’s attitude and willingness to learn.
“Aside from his technical skills, what stood out was his character. He’s eager to improve and receptive to coaching.
That kind of mindset is just as important to us as talent.”
Reflecting on the timeline of the transfer, Glasner admitted, “I think the process took a little longer than it should have, but it’s better to complete the deal now than at the last minute.
We’re excited to have him on board.”
