This is a significant blow for Sunderland but a massive boost for the Blades.
Despite the setback, Sunderland are wasting no time exploring alternatives. Matija Frigan of Westerlo is reportedly on their radar, as is Preston North End’s Emil Riis, with Speakman identifying him as a January target. With just two weeks remaining in the transfer window, the urgency for reinforcements is increasing. The departure of Aaron Connolly to Millwall has left Sunderland’s striking options thin, with only Wilson Isidor and Eliezer Mayenda available under Regis Le Bris.
One potential solution for Sunderland could lie in La Liga. Former Manchester City and Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho, currently at Sevilla, is reportedly available for free. The 28-year-old Nigerian joined Sevilla in the summer after leaving Leicester but has struggled to make an impact, failing to score in nine La Liga appearances. Reports from Spain suggest Sevilla are prepared to offload Iheanacho to ease their wage bill.
Iheanacho’s track record makes him an appealing option. During his seven years at Leicester, he netted 61 goals in 232 appearances, including 42 in the Premier League. Last season, he managed five goals in 23 Championship games. However, his £79,000-a-week wages at Sevilla could be a stumbling block. Sunderland’s owners, though, have demonstrated a willingness to invest in their promotion push, as seen with their coverage of Enzo Le Fée’s substantial Roma wages. A short-term deal for Iheanacho might not be out of reach.
If Sunderland can convince Iheanacho to join on a half-season contract, his experience and proven pedigree at a higher level could provide a significant boost to their promotion ambitions. Whether the striker is open to such a move remains uncertain, but with Sunderland’s strong position and recent signings, their case for landing the Nigerian international is compelling.
