AliousDespite slipping into the relegation zone before their trip to the Stadium of Light, there was still a sense of optimism around Tottenham ahead of Roberto De Zerbi’s first match in charge.
Reports suggested the Spurs squad had quickly embraced De Zerbi’s philosophy and training methods, raising hopes among supporters that the Italian could begin his tenure with a positive result.
That optimism, however, proved short-lived. Tottenham suffered a 1-0 defeat in the North East, leaving them in serious danger of relegation with just six league fixtures remaining.
After the match, Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris insisted he was never overly concerned about Tottenham posing a threat. While Spurs showed glimpses of promise in the first half, their inability to convert chances proved costly, as they were punished after the break.
Le Bris claimed his side always felt in control and believed opportunities would come if they remained disciplined defensively and looked to exploit Tottenham on the counter-attack. He also suggested that while Spurs possess quality individuals, they are struggling to function effectively as a team.
In contrast, De Zerbi offered a more positive assessment of his side’s display. The Tottenham head coach praised his players’ effort, particularly in the opening half, and argued that they were unfortunate to come away without a result.
However, he did acknowledge that confidence within the squad is currently low, expressing belief that a victory could quickly shift momentum and spark an upturn in form.
