But while bolstering the attack is the immediate focus, sporting director Kristjaan Speakman is also known for his long-term planning, keeping an eye on potential signings for the summer.
One player who has remained on Speakman’s radar is Wigan Athletic and England U21 goalkeeper Sam Tickle.

Sunderland’s interest in Tickle stretches back multiple transfer windows, and fresh reports on Wednesday suggested that Championship rivals Preston North End had submitted a bid for the 22-year-old shot-stopper. However, Wigan manager Shaun Maloney was quick to dismiss the claims.
Speaking to *Wigan Today*, Maloney stated: *“No, we didn’t receive a bid for Sam. And I’d be pretty certain Sam will be staying with us through this window, yeah.”*
Tickle has been in outstanding form this season, keeping 11 clean sheets in 27 league appearances, which has also drawn interest from Premier League giants Arsenal and Manchester United.
### What does this mean for Sunderland’s goalkeeping situation?
Sunderland’s goalkeeper position could be in for a shakeup this summer. Anthony Patterson’s performances have come under scrutiny recently, while Matty Young—currently impressing on loan at Salford City—has been linked with Manchester City.
Young, however, has made it clear that his ambition lies with Sunderland, saying: *“I want to play for this club in the future. That is the goal for me. I am working my way up to hopefully get my opportunity. I am really pleased with the progress I am making so far.”*
Unless a big club swoops in for Patterson, Sunderland may not see an immediate need for Tickle. However, with Speakman having done extensive homework on the young keeper, the Black Cats could still make a move for him in the future—especially if he continues to impress.
