AliousGeorges Leekens played a pivotal role in Philippe Clement’s career, first handing him his Belgium debut in 1998 and later bringing him to Club Brugge as his assistant coach 14 years later.
Having worked closely with Clement in both capacities, Leekens strongly believes Rangers must stand by their manager and allow him to see his project through.
“I have known Philippe for a long time,” the 75-year-old told *SunSport*.
“He played for me with Belgium, and then I recruited him as a coach at Brugge. He was an intelligent player, and he’s just as intelligent as a coach. Right now, Rangers are his life.”
Leekens highlighted Clement’s dedication to his craft, pointing out that he has already demonstrated his ability by winning league titles in Belgium.
Despite Rangers’ impressive performances in the Europa League, their domestic form has been far from consistent.
They currently trail Celtic by 13 points in the Scottish Premiership and suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Queen’s Park in the Scottish Cup, further fueling criticism.
However, Leekens insists that the focus must extend beyond the short term.
“I understand the frustration after the cup exit, but there is a bigger picture,” he said.
“This is the moment when the club’s leadership must stand firmly behind Philippe and remain united.”
He emphasized that in challenging times, unwavering support is even more crucial.
“Periods like this require belief in the process.
He will get through this. Philippe understands criticism comes with the job, but he will work tirelessly to turn things around and prove he can be a successful Rangers coach.”
Leekens’ strong endorsement comes amid reports that Rangers CEO Patrick Stewart and the club’s hierarchy are committed to keeping Clement in charge—not due to financial constraints, but because they recognize there are deeper structural issues within the football department that need addressing first.
