AliousGlasner Left Frustrated as Palace Waste Chances in Everton Defeat
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner admitted his side should not have suffered defeat against Everton, as costly defensive mistakes and missed opportunities handed the Toffees a 2-1 victory at Selhurst Park.
Despite dominating large portions of the game, Palace failed to capitalize on their chances, registering 17 shots to Everton’s 11 and accumulating an expected goals (xG) tally of 1.66 compared to Everton’s 0.76. However, two defensive lapses proved costly, allowing Sean Dyche’s side to snatch all three points.
Defensive Errors Prove Costly**
Everton broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute when a mix-up between Tyrick Mitchell and Jefferson Lerma from their own throw-in gifted Beto an easy opportunity to put the visitors ahead. Palace responded swiftly after halftime, with Jean-Philippe Mateta leveling the score just two minutes into the second half. However, their efforts were undone in the 80th minute when Charly Alcaraz capitalized on another defensive lapse to seal Everton’s victory.
Glasner Calls for Better Attacking Solutions**
Speaking after the match, a visibly frustrated Glasner acknowledged his team’s lack of efficiency in front of goal and emphasized the need to provide his players with improved tactical solutions in the final third.
“It was a very disappointing result,” Glasner admitted. “The game unfolded as we expected, but once again, our lack of efficiency cost us. We had several good opportunities in the first half and failed to convert them. Then, just before halftime, we gifted them a goal.
“It’s always tough when you fall behind, but we reacted well after the break. We had momentum but didn’t make it count. Everton played patiently, waiting for their moment. We didn’t press them enough, and we were too preoccupied with their long balls from Pickford. In the end, they punished us from a set-piece, and that’s how we lost the game.”
Glasner also pointed to a similar pattern in Palace’s recent matches, referencing a previous defeat to Brentford where individual errors led to costly goals.
“These are the moments we need to learn from. It’s my responsibility to find better solutions for the team, especially in the final third. We reached our wing-backs frequently, but our first and second touches weren’t sharp enough to execute early passes. Small details decided both our matches against Everton, and while it’s tough to accept, we must move forward and improve.
“We should not have lost this game. It’s on us to learn from these experiences and find ways to control matches against teams that play like Everton.”
With another frustrating home loss on the books, Palace will need to quickly regroup as they look to sharpen their attacking play and tighten up defensively in their upcoming fixtures.
