AliousEverton are reportedly in the final stages of negotiations to bring Brighton’s David Weir on board as their new sporting director, according to sources cited by *Football Insider*.
Manager David Moyes is said to be strongly advocating for the return of his former captain to Goodison Park. Although a formal agreement has yet to be finalized, discussions are believed to be progressing toward completion.
Weir, now 54, enjoyed a lengthy playing career at Everton from 1999 to 2007, amassing 266 appearances before departing for Rangers. He later returned to the club in 2012, taking on coaching roles within the reserve and academy teams.
The former Scotland international has since built an extensive coaching and administrative résumé, holding various positions at Sheffield United, Brentford, Rangers, and Nottingham Forest. He joined Brighton initially as a loan manager before being promoted to technical director in 2022, succeeding Dan Ashworth following his move to Newcastle United.
Everton have faced challenges in the transfer market due to financial constraints in recent seasons, narrowly avoiding relegation in each of the last three campaigns. The club’s current director of football, Kevin Thelwell, may see his role reshaped as The Friedkin Group, the club’s new owners, plan a significant restructuring following their recent high-profile takeover.
