The former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee told Football Insider that match official John Beaton made the correct call in allowing the goal to stand at Celtic Park on 25 February. Hackett also commended the VAR team for conducting a swift review of the incident, which involved Aberdeen’s Alexander Jensen colliding with Arne Engels in the lead-up to McGregor’s strike.
Beaton Under Scrutiny After Recent Officiating Decisions
John Beaton has faced criticism in recent weeks, particularly after a controversial moment in Hibernian’s clash with Rangers, where Mohammed Diomande avoided what many felt was a clear red card for a challenge on Nicky Cadden. However, in this case, Hackett believes Beaton and his officiating team got the decision right.
McGregor’s Goal Stands Despite Brief VAR Check
Celtic put on an emphatic display at home, with Daizen Maeda scoring twice, alongside goals from Jota, McGregor, and Hyun-Jun Yang. Aberdeen managed a late consolation through Shayden Morris, but the only moment of real contention came when McGregor’s goal was briefly reviewed by VAR.
The Celtic captain netted his eighth Scottish Premiership goal of the season, but the decision could have gone the other way if officials had deemed Engels’ contact with Jensen as a foul in the buildup. Ultimately, the goal was given, and Celtic cruised to victory.
Hackett Backs Officials for Making the Right Call
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Hackett stated:
“It would have been very harsh to have ruled that Celtic goal out.”
Celtic’s triumph sees them extend their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership to 16 points, although that could be cut to 13 depending on Rangers’ result against Kilmarnock in Barry Ferguson’s first game in charge.
