Reports have emerged suggesting that the Liverpool legend, who guided Rangers to their first Scottish Premiership title in over a decade, is being considered for a second tenure at Ibrox.
A key factor in this development is the impending takeover of Rangers by the San Francisco 49ers. Some figures within the NFL franchise are reportedly keen on bringing Gerrard back to the club, following his departure in 2021 to take charge of Aston Villa. Gerrard, who has been out of work since leaving Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq a few months ago, is said to be open to the prospect of returning to Glasgow.
According to football journalist Graeme Bailey, discussions have already taken place between Gerrard and representatives of the 49ers. However, a significant obstacle must be addressed before any agreement can be finalized. Should Gerrard return to the UK, he would face a substantial tax bill from HMRC, a financial implication that Rangers would need to consider when negotiating his potential salary package. If this issue can be resolved, there is a real possibility that the former England international could resume his managerial duties at Ibrox, aiming to restore the club to its former glory.
Interestingly, Gerrard had previously been linked with the managerial role at Leeds United around the time the 49ers became involved at Elland Road. However, the position ultimately went to Daniel Farke, a coach praised for his proven track record, particularly in guiding Norwich City to two Championship titles. If the 49ers adopt a similar approach at Rangers, Gerrard’s past success in Scotland—where he led the team to an unbeaten title-winning campaign with 102 points—could work in his favor.
Since Gerrard’s departure, Rangers have struggled to keep pace with Celtic, with managers Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Mick Beale, and Philippe Clement all failing to close the widening gap. Currently, Rangers trail their Old Firm rivals by 16 points, highlighting the scale of the challenge awaiting any incoming manager.
In addition to Gerrard, former Liverpool and Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has also been linked with the Ibrox job. Sources indicate that Rangers have been made aware of Benitez’s availability, though no formal approach has been made for the 64-year-old Spaniard, who last managed Celta Vigo.
Former Rangers forward Gordon Dalziel has expressed strong support for the idea of appointing Benitez, citing his extensive experience and the need for a strong personality to compete with Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers. However, at this stage, all signs seem to be pointing toward Steven Gerrard making a dramatic return to the Rangers dugout.
