Despite an underwhelming winter window, Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris made some crucial decisions, including persuading certain players to remain at the club.
Leo Hjelde’s Decision to Stay at Sunderland
One such player was Leo Hjelde, who had opportunities to leave but chose to fight for his place at Sunderland. Speaking to the media (via the *Northern Echo*), Le Bris explained how he and Hjelde discussed the defender’s future in January.
*”It was a difficult period for Leo because we had discussions about his situation. He had the option to go out on loan, and I made it clear that I couldn’t guarantee him anything because a season like this can be unpredictable.
However, I believed he was important to the team and that he would eventually get his opportunity. That moment came a few games ago, and he showed his quality, proving he was engaged and ready to contribute.”*
Hjelde’s Versatility Proves Valuable
Le Bris emphasized Hjelde’s adaptability, noting that while he may not be a natural full-back, he fits well into Sunderland’s system.
*”Even though he isn’t a full-back by trade, he can play that role for us. Our system relies on wide wingers, so our full-backs play a more central role to support the midfield triangles.
For me, it was clear that Leo could provide support in both the center-back and left-back positions. He has been crucial for us and fully deserved his opportunity. He has performed well and made a real impact.”*
Hjelde’s Role in Sunderland’s Final Push
Since December, Le Bris has consistently highlighted Hjelde’s importance, but injuries and fitness setbacks have limited his involvement. However, he has gradually become more integrated into the squad and recently delivered a standout performance against Sheffield Wednesday when Sunderland needed him most.
While he may not be a regular starter ahead of Dennis Cirkin, Chris Mepham, or Luke O’Nien, having him available—whether in the lineup or on the bench—is a significant boost for the team.
With just nine league games remaining, plus a likely playoff campaign, every squad member will need to step up. In that regard, Le Bris will be pleased to have Hjelde as a dependable option heading into the crucial final stretch of the season.
