Rangers are moving closer to finalizing a deal that would transfer controlling ownership to Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe, with even more exciting developments on the horizon for the Glasgow club.
After a week filled with anticipation—highlighted by Cavenagh’s attendance at the Fenerbahce match—negotiations continue to progress as the final details are being settled.
## Major Shareholders Set to Sell
Former chairmen John Bennett and Dave King, along with several other significant shareholders, are expected to sell their entire stakes in Rangers. This would free up over 20% ownership from the two ex-chairmen alone, with considerably more becoming available once others complete their sales. The consortium’s target is to secure at least 51% ownership of the club.
## New Investors Expected to Join
According to Chris Jack of the Rangers Review [March 20], while Marathe and Cavenagh will maintain control after the takeover is complete, additional investors are anticipated to join the ownership group in the future.
49ers Enterprises technical director Gretar Steinsson is slated to oversee football operations, similar to his role with Leeds United—though Jack dismissed rumors of Rangers becoming a “feeder club” for the English side.
These future investors are expected to provide additional financial strength to the club, though their influence would be “minor” compared to the lead investors. This growing interest demonstrates the appeal of the new project under the incoming regime.
## Board Transition and Management Questions
Patrick Stewart and Fraser Thornton are expected to remain on the board, helping to facilitate a smooth transition to the new ownership structure.
However, critical decisions regarding a permanent manager and sporting director still need to be made. This raises questions about Barry Ferguson’s future, who has revitalized the team’s season since taking over from Philippe Clement on a short-term basis.
Despite his limited coaching experience, Ferguson has achieved remarkable results, including eliminating Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce and securing a rare Old Firm victory at Celtic Park.
