Barry Ferguson’s Rangers Future: Club Faces Critical Decision as Souness Advisory Role Proposed

Barry Ferguson has significantly boosted his prospects of securing the permanent Rangers managerial position following his impressive start as caretaker, though club leadership still faces a major decision regarding their long-term direction.

The Ibrox legend has guided Rangers to victory in three of his five matches since taking temporary charge, highlighted by a memorable 3-2 triumph over Celtic at Parkhead last weekend. This success has positioned Ferguson as a strong contender for the permanent role, but Rangers leadership appears determined to conduct a thorough evaluation before making their final decision.

High-Profile Candidates Still in Contention

Steven Gerrard and Russell Martin remain prominent candidates on Rangers’ shortlist, with club executives likely already working diligently behind the scenes to assess all options.

Souness Advisory Role Proposed

Derek Ferguson, Barry’s brother, has advocated for bringing Graeme Souness into the club’s decision-making process. Souness, who possesses extensive knowledge of Rangers, previously contributed to the selection process that brought Philippe Clement to Ibrox in 2023 after Michael Beale’s departure—though Souness had reportedly preferred Frank Lampard at that time.

“Souness brings an aura and a wealth of experience. It’s exactly the type of calibre of person we need at the club,” Derek Ferguson told Ibrox News exclusively. “I think he misjudged Rangers when he first arrived, but he learned very quickly. He knows the club inside out and he’s very passionate.”

Derek believes Souness would be an invaluable asset regardless of who ultimately secures the managerial position: “Whether Barry is going to be in charge or not next season, get him [Souness] involved. I’ve been saying for the past few years that Souness should be in a position behind the scenes.”

He added that while “Clement may have felt threatened by his [Souness’s] presence,” having someone with such extensive “experience and knowledge” could only benefit the club.

Ferguson’s Ongoing Audition

Ultimately, Barry Ferguson’s fate remains in his own hands over the coming months. If he continues to deliver performances similar to those against Fenerbahce and Celtic, Rangers leadership may find it difficult to look elsewhere.

With approximately two months remaining in his audition period, Ferguson has a clear path to securing the position permanently. The equation appears straightforward: continue winning matches, and the job will likely be his.
