However, with a £62.5m release clause embedded in that deal, it’s uncertain whether it will suffice to retain the dynamic forward past the summer transfer period.
Undeterred, Wolves have now locked in another Brazilian gem for the long haul. Joao Gomes, a beloved figure among supporters, has signed a five-year extension, binding him to Molineux until the summer of 2030, with an additional one-year option should both parties agree.
This development is a relief to fans who had feared the midfielder might follow in Cunha’s footsteps and depart in the upcoming transfer window.
The signing was finalized just ahead of Wolves’ Premier League clash with West Ham United on April 1.
A club announcement celebrated the news: “Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes has pledged his long-term future to the club with a new five-year contract.” It added that the deal includes a potential 12-month extension.
Since arriving in England two years ago, Gomes has blossomed into a linchpin for the team, earning 80 appearances in Wolves’ colors and securing a spot in Brazil’s national squad.
Manager Vitor Pereira couldn’t hide his enthusiasm, praising Gomes’ dedication: “I’m thrilled because Joao is all about the team. He gives everything—100 percent in training and matches—and has the skills to push this club forward.”
Looking ahead to the 2025/26 season, Gomes is poised to remain a cornerstone under Pereira’s leadership. With a comfortable nine-point cushion above the relegation zone and projections suggesting Wolves are safe from the drop even without earning another point this term, the club is evidently gearing up for another year in the top tier.
Since joining in 2023, Gomes has been a mainstay, featuring in over 80 matches across all competitions. His consistent presence has only solidified under Pereira, who clearly sees the Brazilian as a vital cog in his preferred lineup.
This contract renewal quashes any lingering concerns about a summer exit. Reports from Molineux News had indicated that Gomes was drawing significant attention as the June transfer window loomed, with Tottenham Hotspur among the clubs linked.
However, Spurs appear more inclined to pursue Lille’s Angel Gomes instead, leaving Wolves’ midfield maestro firmly in place for the foreseeable future.
