AliousMatt O’Riley, the Denmark international who joined Brighton & Hove Albion from Celtic for £25 million, has had a modest start at his new club, featuring in just six starting lineups and totaling 15 appearances across all competitions for the Seagulls.
As Brighton prepare to host Aston Villa at the American Express Stadium in a mid-table Premier League encounter, manager Fabian Hurzeler provided an update on the midfielder’s status. Speaking ahead of the clash, the German coach expressed optimism: “Matt’s in excellent form right now.
He’s been outstanding in training and left a strong impression. It’s encouraging to see players like him, who haven’t had much game time this season, showing such drive and enthusiasm.
That kind of energy and character is exactly what we’ll rely on for the remainder of the campaign. During his two-and-a-half years with Celtic, O’Riley was a standout performer, making 124 appearances, scoring 27 goals, and providing 35 assists.
His trophy haul in Scotland includes three Scottish Premiership titles, two Scottish Cups, and a League Cup, capped off by being named Celtic’s Player of the Year by both fans and fellow players last season.
Now tied to Brighton until 2029, O’Riley made his debut in an EFL Cup match against Crawley Town, though his outing was cut short after nine minutes due to a harsh tackle.
He opened his goal-scoring account for the Seagulls in November, netting in a 2-1 home victory over reigning Premier League champions Manchester City, signaling his potential to make an impact as he settles into life on England’s south coast.
