Peter Lovenkrands has taken aim at Barry Ferguson for his decision to overhaul the Rangers lineup in their 2-2 draw with Aberdeen, branding the move a costly gamble that disrupted the team’s flow.
The former Ibrox winger, who previously played alongside Ferguson, was left unimpressed by the interim boss’s approach to squad rotation.
Ferguson opted to make nine changes to the side that faced Athletic Bilbao, bringing in lesser-used names like Oscar Cortes, Danilo, Findlay Curtis, and Ross McCausland.
The result? Rangers trailed 2-0 and were a man down by the interval.
Although Ianis Hagi’s dramatic stoppage-time goal salvaged a point, Lovenkrands believes the lineup shakeup put the team under avoidable pressure.
“That’s not how I would have handled it,” he said, underlining the need for consistency in selection—especially with high-stakes matches on the horizon.
Lovenkrands reflected on his own experience, stating that during intense European schedules, players still wanted to be on the pitch regularly to keep sharp and connected.
He fears Ferguson’s heavy rotation, aimed at resting players ahead of the return leg against Bilbao, may have risked derailing their domestic momentum.
While protecting players for Europe is understandable, Lovenkrands argued that balancing priorities is key—and in this instance, Ferguson may have tipped the scale too far.
